Aug. 29: OF Jarren Duran to have season-ending surgery
After Duran met with a foot specialist in Charlotte on Monday, the Red Sox announced Tuesday that the outfielder will have season-ending surgery to repair a bad case of turf toe. Duran exited in the sixth inning of Boston's win over New York on Aug. 20 after suffering a left toe contusion while climbing the left-field wall in an attempt to catch the home run hit by Gleyber Torres. He was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Aug. 21 and has been wearing a walking boot.

"When they get in, they’ll see where we are with that," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "He’s gonna lose the season. The expectations are for him to be back, ready to go in Spring Training. Just talking to [trainer] Brandon [Henry], they have to go in there and take care of it, whatever they have to do to take care of it, so we’ll have more details tomorrow."

Duran had the best season of his career, slashing .295/.346/.482 with 34 doubles, two triples and eight homers while stealing 24 bases in 26 attempts.

Aug. 29: LHP Joe Jacques recalled from Triple-A Worcester; RHP Kyle Barraclough optioned to Worcester
Jacques has made 17 appearances (one start) with the Red Sox this season, his Major League debut, recording a 5.85 ERA. The 28-year-old has also posted a 2.83 ERA in 30 games (one start) for Worcester during 2023. Originally selected by Pittsburgh in the 33rd round of the '18 Draft out of Manhattan College, the New Jersey native was acquired by the Red Sox in the Triple-A phase of the '22 Rule 5 Draft.

Barraclough tossed 4 1/3 innings Monday night against the Astros, his third outing for the Red Sox this season. The right-hander is 8-0 with a 2.43 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) with Worcester. Signed by Boston in June, the California native owns a 3.86 ERA in 291 career Major League games with the Marlins (2015-18), Nationals ('19), Giants ('19), Twins ('21), Angels ('22) and Red Sox ('23).

Aug. 28: Recalled INF/OF Ceddanne Rafaela and INF David Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester; INF Pablo Reyes placed on 10-day injured list with left elbow inflammation; OF Wilyer Abreu placed on paternity list
The Sox made a series of roster moves prior to Monday's game against the Astros. The most significant news is the arrival of Rafaela for his first stint in the Major Leagues. The No. 77 prospect in the game and No. 3 for the Red Sox per MLB Pipeline, Rafaela, 22, is an elite defender in center field and also solid at shortstop. Hamilton is a burner on the bases and had a stint with Boston earlier in the season.

The moves were necessitated by the left elbow injury to Reyes and Abreu going on the paternity list.
