Aug. 29: IF/OF selected from Triple-A Louisville; OF optioned to Triple-A; RHP designated for assignment
Lopez slashed .282/.390/.403 in 108 games with Louisville this season. The switch-hitting 27-year-old, who was up with Cincinnati for parts of the last two seasons, can play all over the field and will primarily get at-bats as a pinch-hitter. Manager David Bell did not rule out Lopez getting some starts, noting that second base might be the position where he's most likely to start in the field.

Aug. 28: IF placed on 10-day injured list; OF activated from concussion IL
McLain headed to the IL with a right oblique strain a day after going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts against the D-backs. A National League Rookie of the Year contender, McLain was batting .290/.357/.507 with 16 homers and 14 stolen bases. Fairchild returned to game action for the first time since Aug. 20. More >>

Aug. 27: RHP recalled from Triple-A Louisville; RHP optioned to Louisville
Duarte returned for his fifth big league stint of 2023. Kennedy, who pitched four innings in relief during Friday's 10-8 loss to Arizona, was sent out to get a fresh arm. Manager David Bell didn't rule out having Kennedy back next month to potentially make starts for the club.

OF (stress fracture in left fourth toe)
Expected return: September
Fraley began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Aug. 29. He's scheduled to play in back-to-back games, after which he could be activated if all goes well. (Last updated: Aug. 29)

INF (left oblique strain)
Expected return: September
Newman has resumed hitting in the cage after he suffered an oblique strain during a pregame double-play drill on Aug. 18. He was placed on the IL the next day (retroactive to Aug. 16) and is not expected to miss much time. Newman has played all four infield positions this season. He was slashing .253/.311/.364 prior to his injury. (Last updated: Aug. 29)

LHP (left hamstring tightness)
Expected return: Sept. 9
Young felt left hamstring tightness in his last couple of appearances, including on Aug. 24, when he took the loss at Arizona after walking the leadoff batter and giving up a two-run homer to Corbin Carroll. The plan is for him to not throw for two or three days before resuming baseball activity. (Last updated: Aug. 26)

1B (left shoulder strain)
Expected return: Sept. 3
Votto had experienced weakness in the same shoulder that underwent surgery in 2022 to repair torn biceps and a torn rotator cuff. The hope is he can strengthen the shoulder and be back with the club on the first day he is eligible for activation. (Last updated: Aug. 24)

C (left foot contusion)

Casali, who has been on the injured list since July 24 after fouling a ball off his foot in the batting cage a day earlier, had his rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville halted after six games on Aug. 24 because of an illness. After taking batting practice at Angel Stadium on Aug. 22, India departed to continue working out at the team's complex in Goodyear, Ariz. LHP (left tibia stress reaction)

Lodolo will get a second opinion in New York on Aug. 30 after a return of his injury. He endured a setback on Aug. 20 during his rehab start with Triple-A Louisville. An MRI exam revealed a reoccurrence of a stress reaction in his left tibia. (Last updated: Aug. 29)

RHP (right shoulder)
Expected return: TBD
Dunn will get a second opinion on his shoulder after experiencing a setback in his recovery. He made three appearances for Triple-A Louisville before his rehab assignment was halted on Aug. 24.

The right-hander, who has dealt with shoulder issues each of the past two seasons, has been out since Spring Training because of soreness in the subscapularis muscle in his right rotator cuff. (Last updated: Aug. 29)

RHP (Tommy John surgery)

Antone worked a scoreless inning with one hit and one strikeout for Triple-A Louisville on Aug. 26, his 12th appearance during his rehab assignment. Antone and the Reds recently agreed to extend his rehab assignment by 10 days as he works his way has back from a second Tommy John surgery.

Manager David Bell did not rule another extension -- if both sides agree -- when the current one expires.

“He’s doing well. No decision has been made yet. He is feeling good and pitching well," Bell said. (Last updated: Aug. 27)

Gutierrez was returned from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville due to triceps pain. He is expected to be evaluated by multiple doctors, including a Reds team doctor, to figure out the issue and determine next steps. In his last appearance on Aug. 12, Gutierrez threw 29 pitches (15 strikes) and averaged 90.3 mph on his fastball, down from his 2022 season average of 92.8.

In his previous two appearances with Louisville, Gutierrez was hovering around 91-93 mph. Although he's a starting pitcher, Gutierrez was being prepped for a bullpen role this season, and he could return to starting in 2024. (Last updated: Aug. 18)

Sanmartin underwent Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow on July 7, it was revealed on July 28. He originally was diagnosed with a stress reaction after he left a relief outing on May 7. (Last updated: July 28)

Overton underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on May 23. His elbow and arm were not responding well to certain throwing distances during long tossing at Goodyear, Ariz., which is when the Reds discovered the issue. The right-hander has been on the IL since April 15. (Last updated: May 25)
